How to prepare Form 8962
About Form IRS 8962
Form IRS 8962 is an official document used by taxpayers in the United States to claim the Premium Tax Credit (PTC) and reconcile their Advance Premium Tax Credits (APTC) received during the year with their actual income. This form is required by taxpayers who have purchased health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace and received financial assistance in the form of tax credits to help pay for their monthly insurance premiums. Individuals who have received APTC and wish to claim the PTC on their tax return must file Form 8962 with their annual federal income tax return. This form helps taxpayers calculate the amount of tax credit they are eligible for based on their income and family composition. Form 8962 is also used to reconcile any overpayment or underpayment of APTC received during the year. If a taxpayer received too much APTC during the year, they may have to pay back some of the credit on their tax return. If they received too little APTC, they may be eligible for a tax credit refund on their tax return. In summary, taxpayers who have purchased insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace and received APTC must file Form 8962 with their federal income tax return to claim the PTC and reconcile their APTC payments.
